Upstart: loans beyond the credit score

4.2 / 5 · Editorial rating

Upstart connects borrowers with lending institutions that consider more than a credit score. Compare the final APR, fees and cash received before accepting an offer.

What Upstart does

A personal-loan marketplace with three- and five-year terms. Its model considers employment and education alongside credit information. The lender’s individual offer, including any origination fee, matters more than the advertised starting rate.

Upstart Network operates a loan marketplace rather than lending the money itself. Participating regulated financial institutions make the loans. The published personal-loan options use fixed rates and three- or five-year terms. Loan size, pricing and fees depend on the offer and the borrower’s state. Upstart says its model considers employment and education as well as credit information, but it does not require a minimum level of education. None of these factors guarantees approval or the lowest rate.

Four things to compare

Published information checked November 2, 2026. State and individual offer conditions apply.

More than a score

Employment and education can inform the model.

Upstart states no minimum educational attainment. That broadens the information considered, not a promise of approval.

Two repayment terms

Three- and five-year options are advertised.

Compare the payment and total repayment for the same requested amount before selecting a term.

Cash after fees

An origination fee can reduce the deposit.

Ask for both the amount financed and the net cash you will receive. Other fees can apply under the agreement.

No early payoff penalty

The published terms allow early repayment without a penalty.

Ask the lender for the payoff amount and payment instructions when you are ready to close the loan.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • The model considers employment and education in addition to credit information.
  • Checking the initial rate uses a soft credit inquiry.
  • The published options include three- and five-year fixed-rate terms.
  • The published personal loans have no prepayment penalty.

Cons

  • The lowest advertised APR is limited to the strongest applicants.
  • An origination fee may reduce the cash you receive.
  • Loan amounts and fees vary by state and individual offer.
  • A full application can affect your credit through a hard inquiry.

The repayment options

These are the advertised term choices. Obtain an individual rate and fee quote for the amount you need.

From rate check to decision

  1. Choose the amount you need

Start with the cash you need to receive. A fee deducted from the loan can make that different from the amount financed.

  2. Check the initial offer

Use the soft-inquiry rate check to review the available terms. An initial result does not guarantee final approval.

  3. Compare the full disclosure

Identify the lending institution. Read the APR, interest rate, origination fee, cash received and repayment schedule together.

  4. Decide whether to continue

A full application involves a hard credit inquiry. Continue only after the offer fits your budget and borrowing purpose.

What reaches your account

The provider’s published example shows why loan size and cash received are different. This illustration isolates the origination fee. It is not an offer.

Cash received

Upstart’s example also lists a 19.08% interest rate and a 23.37% APR over 60 months. APR and interest rate are different measures. This calculation covers net proceeds only. Individual fees and terms vary. Checked November 2, 2026.

If you need the entire requested amount in your account, compare the net proceeds before accepting. Then check the lender’s total repayment figure separately.

When to include Upstart in your comparison

What do you need from the quote?

Your financial profile includes more than a credit score

Consider a rate check

The model includes other information. Compare the actual offer without assuming those factors will secure approval.

You need a specific cash amount

Check the net proceeds

An origination fee can reduce the deposit. Compare that deposit with the expense you need to cover.

You may repay ahead of schedule

Review early payoff terms

The published loan has no prepayment penalty. Keep the lender’s payoff process and current balance in view.

The quoted APR or payment strains your budget

Do not rely on the starting rate

Compare other offers or a smaller amount before making a borrowing commitment.

Compare the two terms fairly

Shorter schedule

Three-year offer

  • Request a quote for the same cash need.
  • Compare the monthly payment.
  • Record fees and total repayment.
Longer schedule

Five-year offer

  • Keep the comparison amount consistent.
  • Check how long the payment remains in your budget.
  • Compare total cost, not payment alone.

These are comparison steps, not a claim that one term or rate will be available to every applicant.

Use the APR to compare the cost of similar loan offers, but also compare fees paid upfront and the cash received. A low advertised minimum cannot replace the lender’s disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Does Upstart lend the money?

Upstart Network operates a marketplace. Participating regulated financial institutions make the loans. Check the institution named in your offer.

  2. Do I need a college degree?

Upstart states no minimum educational attainment requirement. Education can be one input in its model, alongside employment and credit information. That does not guarantee eligibility.

  3. Does checking a rate affect my credit?

The initial rate check uses a soft inquiry. Continuing with a full application involves a hard credit inquiry that can affect your score.

  4. Can the origination fee reduce my deposit?

Yes. When the lender deducts an origination fee, the deposit is smaller than the amount financed. Check both figures before accepting.

  5. Is the advertised APR my rate?

No. The page’s 6.3%–35.99% reference range is tied to five-year offers in June 2026. Your individual rate depends on your application and the lender’s offer.
